Jack St.John

My work at this time varies from small drawings and studies to large mixed-media pieces on paper. These pieces represent an ongoing, evolving process of using an expressionistic vocabulary to reinterpret a landscape memory, where the joy and energy of color and mark-making transcend references to external visual reality. Rocky and woodland landscapes- viewed, walked through, touched- serve as launching points for this work, with occasional intrusions of the human presence, but the elements that distinguish these scenes are reconstituted to a point where they may not be recognizable. The result is an active, resonant field of marks and colors, where all the constituent, formal parts, however demonstrative or idiosyncratic, unify for the viewer, to create a distinct composition that exists apart, and on its own, exuding its own unique feeling and veiled references to nature.
